Check these first
- Move away from metal, speakers, chargers and electrical equipment.
- If you use a magnetic case, wallet or mount, take it off and try again.
- Hold the phone flat, with its top edge pointing away from you.
- Rotate the phone slowly through several orientations to recalibrate it.
- Check that the place above is where you actually are.
- Compare the bearing with a map or a physical compass.
If you are inside a mosque, its established qibla is a better guide than a phone compass that disagrees with it.
About this direction
The qibla is calculated. The compass is measured.
The bearing above is worked out from the coordinates of your place and of the Kaaba. It does not depend on your phone's sensors, and it is the same whether or not the compass works.
The moving needle uses your phone's magnetometer, which can be pulled off by metal, magnets and electrical equipment, and which differs in quality from one phone to another. A compass that looks wrong does not mean the calculated direction is wrong — you can use the bearing with any map or compass instead.
